Mailhaier

* * *

Mailhaier clenched his fists, trying in desperation to control his raging temper. But every time his breathing became even, he thought of the pleasure he’d feel if he were able to kill the two old Elementalists, and he panted like a dog.

Stopping me from killing the girl had been a grave mistake.

They’d been a thorn in his side for many long years, and as he stared down at them, he longed to burn them to ash. But he knew better than to ignore his dark master’s orders, which had remained the same for more than ten years, he was forbidden to kill them.

Quigley’s brown eyes narrowed. “What are you going to do? Murder us?”

Smoke swirled around Mailhaier and the two old Elementalists as they squared off on the wooden platform, and the moans of the injured and dying drifted to him like a pleasant orchestra. Aldred’s eyes flickered between Mailhaier and the villagers, concern event in his wrinkled face. But Quigley’s eyes remained locked on Mailhaier’s, his challenge evident.

Mailhaier took a step towards the short Elementalist. Quigley’s left leg moved backward, planting firmly on the ground, and Mailhaier’s mouth twisted into a smile.

The old warrior is afraid. Good. He should be.

Aldred and Quigley had long ago realized that something prevented him from killing them, and Mailhaier was afraid they’d begun to look at him like he were some kind of collared dog, doing only what his master allowed. But this time, they had done something foolish. They’d depleted far too much of their magic trying to bring the worthless human village some water, and in doing so, had made themselves weak.

It’s never wise to weaken yourself before an enemy.

“Come on now, let us not behave rashly,” Aldred murmured, placing a hand on his friend’s shoulder. “You must have known,” he continued, turning his pale blue eyes upon Mailhaier, “that we couldn’t have allowed you to kill the girl.”

Mailhaier snarled. Of all the people he hated, Aldred was among the most. His undying love of the weak humans had made the Dark Ones’ goal to annihilate the human race far too difficult. And what was worse, Aldred was one of the few people who knew of Mailhaier’s greatest weakness.

Flames leaped to Mailhaier’s hand. “You don’t allow me to do anything.”

Aldred flinched at the words, and Mailhaier smiled, enjoying how easily he could wound the old man. Years of being near Aldred had taught him something valuable, Aldred still believed that somewhere deep inside of Mailhaier lived a man capable of love. But what he didn’t understand, would never understand, was that Mailhaier’s heart and soul died with that of his beloved. All that remained was his deep, unwavering determination to destroy the ones responsible for her death, the humans.

In moments of anger, Mailhaier sometimes wasted energy hating the old men, energy that was better used in remembering his true enemies. Still, he could make Aldred suffer.

Letting the flames die from his hand, Mailhaier smirked. “You’re right, as always. There’s no point in killing you.
